Elevation Science Institute’s Fossil Preparation Internship Program creates extensive opportunities for interns to enhance their understanding of techniques and skills associated with fossil preparation. Interns work alongside Elevation Science staff as well as staff and volunteers from Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC) in order to prepare fossil specimens collected on Bureau of Land Management land in Montana. As their skills develop, interns will be given greater responsibilities and opportunities in order to grow their knowledge of fossil preparation. Fossil preparation routinely includes following one specimen from start to finish, which in this case means from the opening of a field jacket through being curated in the collection at CMC. As an intern in the Paleo Lab, interns will be expected to assist with the preparation, stabilization, and repair of vertebrate fossils using specialized equipment, tools, consolidants, and adhesives. Additionally, interns will be expected to assist in building archival cradles and documenting finished specimens.
